The spring symphony has arrived! The woods went from medium quiet to good and
loud, just since Saturday morning. Driving into the park on the north side, I
took the road at 20 mph with the windows down...ovenbirds, tanagers, thrushes,
everywhere. It was a joyful racket.
FOS park birds were cerulean, hooded, and worm-eating warblers; green heron,
summer tanager. 11 warbler spp. today.
Two red-headed woodpeckers put on a show at a nest hole, drumming and
displaying.
Elsewhere on the same snag, a flicker was sitting at a hole entrance, when a
cowbird ventured too close. The flicker came out of there like a shot, nailed
the cowbird, and they tumbled in a squawking flash of yellow wings and feathers
a good 30 feet to the ground. Very dramatic…I didn’t stop to give the cowbird
last rites, but I suspect they would have been appropriate.
