I spent some time yesterday afternoon in southern Warren County looking through flocks of interior Canada Geese. There were about 300 grazing on the soccer field at Griffin Park, and interestingly, at least 5 of the birds showed some form of a white ring at the base of the black neck sock. Pairs of Ruddy and Ring-necked Ducks were present also. A flock of approximately 200 geese was present at a wet-weather pond along 31-w south of Bowling Green, including five Cackling Geese. Four appeared to be fairly typical for B.h.hutchinsii, but one was somewhat smaller and much darker, especially on the breast. There is a lot to be learned regarding the range of variation in these birds now that more attention will be turned toward them. Waltons' Pond hosted about 100 geese including three Greater White-fronted. McElroy Lake continues to rise but no birds were present. Thirty or so Mallards were observed at Chaney. A dozen Redheads and a Gadwall were present at Petros Pond. David L. Roemer Bowling Green, Ky. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? All your favorites on one personal page ?
