We just returned from a trip south and on the way home stopped in Nashville to see DH's family. One nephew is a devout sportsman, ALWAYS hunting and fishing year round, regardless of weather. Somehow the issue of hunting Sandhill cranes came up. I was amazed when he said how much he was against it, given his love of guns and hunting. So I guess there is hope. Also he had recently shot a banded duck with a transmitter. Much to my surprise (again), he had reported it and also said in past years, he had killed many banded ducks, geese, etc. and always reported those to the proper place. Just telling about this because I frankly thought he was just another red neck hunter (he looks it) who was not interested in scientific/environmental issues.
