As a novice birder, I have a new life bird today. I identified a summer
tanager at the suet feeder today. I'd seen it for a couple of days and
thought it was a cardinal, but I put the glasses on it today for the first
time. Not a cardinal at all!
Our backyard has been teeming with good birds, 3 Baltimore Orioles that are
devouring the grape jelly, 2 male Blue Grosbeaks, a Rose Breasted Grosbeak,
Kingbirds, 2 pairs of Downies, Bluebirds, Green Heron, Red Wing Blackbirds,
and lots of other commoners. Haven't seen the Red Bellied Woodpeckers for a
while, but I hear the Pilated in the woods every few days. A Kingfisher is
a regular flying overhead between ponds.
I'm sure there are lots of other birds I haven't even been able to ID. I've
been hearing a bird in the spring for about 3 years with a very distinct
5-note song, but I've never been able to see it. This morning it was
singing in our yard, so maybe I'm getting closer.
