I had to go to Hart County today, so I slipped a few counties farther south and
checked some of the transient ponds south and southwest of Bowling Green. It
has been a wet summer across southern KY, and many of the better transient
lakes and ponds have had some water in them. Results of checking them, however,
were sort of a mish-mash of results. Corn was planted early, and some pools are
"buried" in growing corn, making them invisible. Modest results follow:
McElroy Lake ... the bottom bowl *has* had shallow water recently, but it has
dropped out and only a couple of small pools were present on the west side and
visible only by walking along the edge of formerly flooded corn. Killdeer 24;
Lesser Yellowlegs 4; Pectoral Sandpiper 2; Least Sandpiper 3.
Walton Pond ... water present, but recent rain has put the water level up into
weeds and grass; may be decen for shorebirds in a week or so. Sort of surprised
to have at least 25 Cliff Swallows foraging over it; commonest swallow there.
Chaney Lake ... west side; same situation but without swallows. It could be
good for shorebirds and/or waders in a week or two depending on additional
rainfall.
J. Ferguson Road pond s. of Middleton, Simpson Co. ... just one small pool in
small soybeans; 8 Killdeer; 1 Least Sandpiper.
There were many other smaller pools that had flooded out either corn or
soybeans in recent weeks, but I didn't see any with birds other than a few
Killdeer.
