Cassie Crawford and I drove all over Lexington and the surrounding areas yesterday looking for the Snowy Owl. We went everywhere from near Winchester to near Nicholasville to near the Airport, making a BIG sweep through the countryside. There had been two people at her school who thought they had seen it -- one (rather credible ID skills) who had seen it in Winchester a few days before the guy here near Andover (very creidible ID skills) saw it, and one (questionable ID skills) who thought she saw it off New Circle near Harrodsburd Rd the day after. But we were unseccessful in our hunt to find it. No other sightings to report. We did, however, spot a field sparrow behind the airport near the armory. Picture attached. We hear they're rare, though it seems not as rare nor elusive as the Snowy. Also, we're officially dedicating the Barn Owl House we're putting up at Talon Winery (7086 Tates Creek Road in Lexington) next weekend at 1:00pm on Sunday, February 16th. Everyone is welcome. This is part of a National Audubon Society collaborative funding grant that the Buckley Hills Audubon Society has co-funded with assistance from Home Depot. The project aims to put Barn Owl Houses up at as many local wineries as funding and winery willingness will allow. After Sunday's dedication, please also join us for a Talon wine tasting ($5 per person). Talon is also a decent place to backyard bird count-- last time we were out there we saw a number of different waterfowl on the small ponds.
