Since it was a relatively warm day we had to go out birding this evening and it paid off in spades as we observed thirteen Short Ear Owls between 5:15 and 5:50 pm cst. We did not count the numerous Harrier Hawks. To my knowledge this is the highest single day count for short ears this winter in KY. Wonder how many you could count if you really covered the huge reclaimed strip mine area? The old reclaimed nearly worthless strip mine land does have a nice plus as it is of course prime habitat for short ears due to the number of mice and voles. The Fish and Wildlife have done a fine job planting wheat in large plots as well as wide strips of wheat which wonder for miles. I must say the wheat is doing well. A number of intern biology students are studying the wildlife out there and I wish I knew more about what they were doing. Hope to check into that and let you know. I do know some of the interns are studying quail populations by trapping and measuring parameters and then releasing the birds.
