March 20, 2009: The red-headed woodpeckers were actively calling this afternoon at Tygarts State Forest adjacent to Carter Caves State Park. Trees in this part of the forest suffered severe ice damage during the ice storm of 2003. The state Division of Forestry acted quickly to salvage harvest timber on about 250 acres. The result is a patchy, savanna-like oak forest with a thick, briery understory. A fair number of oak snags are standing in the forest as well. The heavy white oak acorn crop and beechnut crop in Carter County this past winter has made this location heaven for the woodpeckers. Forestry employees discovered some American chestnut trees growing in one of the canopy gaps. The chestnut stump sprouts have responded well to the additional sunlight and should flower and produce nuts sometime in the next few years. Wouldn't it be exciting to see a red-headed woodpecker carrying an American chestnut in its beak some day? Scott Freidhof Rowan County
