To follow up, it seems the bird is indeed 'Whoops' again. Hummingbird bands have a letter followed by 5 numbers, and the Young's have managed to get the 5 numbers during feeder visits, which match 'Whoops'. I believe having a Rufous return 3 straight years is absolutely unprecedented for anywhere as northern, eastern, and interior as Kentucky. Goes to show these birds can not only survive winters here, but return, with proper feeder management. The one thing that I am most amazed about is how early this bird returned, particularly for a female. It will be interesting to see if she decides to stick out the winter yet again.
