Tommy Quarles and I birded in western Henderson County yesterday, another
blustery early April day (-- enough with the wind already ... :o(
We were looking for shorebirds and found 8 species. Nice collections were found
at a few spots including the quickly disappearing Woods Tract South at Sloughs
WMA, where about 500 birds were present: ca. 300 Pectoral Spipers, ca. 200
Lesser Yellowlegs, at least 12 Dunlin, a few Greater Yellowlegs and Killdeer, 2
Long-billed Dowitchers (called), and 1 Stilt Sandpiper. Other spots in the
vicinity held only numbers of both yellowlegs and Pecs, although another
Long-billed Dowitcher and a couple of Wilson's Snipe were with some commoner
birds at Hardy Slough.
The same four dabbler species continue to dominate with both teal, Northern
Shoveler, and Gadwall scattered about pools all over. We also saw a few Lesser
Scaup, Hooded Mergansers, and 4 Red-breasted Mergansers. The slough along KY
268 northwest of Sauerheber was covered in mostly Blue-winged Teal, where I
counted at least 750, I think the most I've ever seen in one spot in KY.
A few passerines of note included a Northern Parula, a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,
both kinglets, and small numbers of Purple Martin, Tree Swallow, No.
Rough-winged Swallow, and Barn Swallow.
