It's disappointing to look forward for several weeks to some birding after Thanksgiving and be confronted with windy weather, levels on Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake above winter norms (covering many of the favored loafing areas) and waterfowl hunters everywhere . . . but time off is time off so Amy and I kept birding anyway. Highlights included a House Wren on the Riverqueen Unit of Peabody WMA on the 28th and a 2nd winter Laughing Gull on the roof of the Ky Dam Village St Pk marina on the 29th. I heard a few flyover Lapland Longspurs at Barkley Dam. Numbers of American White Pelicans were down greatly since earlier in the month, with the largest number down around the Silo Overlook on Lake Barkley and Energy Lake. Gull numbers are quite unimpressive, with Bonies just about equaling Ringers in numbers (<1,000 each). Despite the high water levels above the dams, neither was open??? Waterfowl were scattered about by the hunting activity and hard to see because of the wind and radiation waves, but it was nice to see a few sizable flocks of Common Goldeneyes, Buffleheads and Hooded Mergansers. Loon/grebe numbers are also relatively low for the season with some apparently departing in the past couple of days. bpb, Louisville brainard.palmer-ball AT ky.gov ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== The BIRDKY Mailing List requires you to sign your messages with first & last name, city, & state abbreviation. -------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Kentucky Ornithological Society web site at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison, Richmond, KY E-mail: gary.ritchison@xxxxxxx
