Brian Wulker, Tommy Quarles, and I attended the KOS meeting at Ky Dam Village.
Overall the theme was HOT and relatively unbirdy . . . the entire group put
together a list of 130+ species but nothing particularly rare. Shorebird
habitat is present around the lakes in abundance, but I think only 13 species
were tallied. Best were a couple of Buff-breasteds on the Blood River embayment
of Ky Lake and a Sanderling at the mouth of Lick Creek on Lake Barkley.
Larids were hard to come by, too. Personally, I only saw Forster's Terns at
Sledd Creek. I saw Caspian Tern FINALLY reported on an eBird list yesterday
afternoon on Lake Barkley. Lesser Black-backed Gull was the only odd gull I
heard about.
Songbird migrants were not particularly abundant either, but a number of
Golden-wingeds were found. The best area for warblers was the Boyd's Landing
boat ramp area on Lake Barkley.
On the way down, we visited the Camp Mines in Union County and had 8 species of
shorebirds but nothing rare. Stilt Sandpipers were the best. We did hear at
least one Least Bittern at Camp #11.
Yesterday morning we visited the pair of Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks at New
Concord, Calloway County, and birded our way back northeast. We had a single
juv. American Golden-Plover on the Little River embayment of Lake Barkley, and
*finally* some decent warbler numbers on a rural road in Caldwell County.
