Last week I visited the Camp#11 mine area in Union County where I have been conducting waterbird surveys for Peabody Coal Company for a couple of years. There has been a nice array of lingering waterfowl, but I was surprised to find a female Gadwall there with two downy ducklings! There has been a pair there since early May. I got some photos, hopefully. The mother was very attentive; sometimes the male hung around them, but sometimes not. The young look different, especially buffier, than Mallard ducklings, and have a different patterning of colors This is the same area where American Coots nested last year (and they are nesting again). At least two Common Moorhens are lingering again this year and may be nesting, too. There are also several Least Bitterns and a calling Pied-billed Grebe (although I have not been able to find young). Canada Geese, Mallards and Wood Ducks also are breeding and I've now seen Green Heron young (nests are apparently in the extensive patches of reeds). I suspect some of the lingering Blue-winged Teal have at least tried to nest, but I have seen no broods yet. Ruddy Ducks are lingering again this summer, but I have found no evidence of nesting (although it is probably more likely than the Gadwall). Last week, an American Black Duck showed up, along with a pair of Black-necked Stilts. This interesting area remains closed to the public, but I have scheduled a field trip there for mid-August (one of the places we visited on a field trip last year) -- details later. bpb, Louisville brainard.palmer-ball@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== The BIRDKY Mailing List requires you to sign your messages with first & last name, city, & state abbreviation. -------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Kentucky Ornithological Society web site at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison, Richmond, KY E-mail: gary.ritchison@xxxxxxx
