June 8, 2012: The Kentucky Division of Forestry's tree nursery in Morgan County provided some good birds today. Habitat around the nursery was drastically changed by the tornado in March. Few big trees are remaining and the white pines near the entrance have a whole lot of character now that their branches have been completely and/or partially torn off. A red-headed woodpecker flew across the road when I first arrived. Then I heard the purple martins' alarm calls. They successfully mobbed a Cooper's hawk out of the area. The metal martin houses at the Youth Center adjacent to the nursery were destroyed by the tornado. The martins have moved to the metal houses at a church up on the hill. On the way out, a horned lark flushed from the nursery beds.
