On Saturday, Clay Bliznick and I covered the small portion of the Reelfoot Lake
CBC that is in Fulton County. It was a relatively dreary day, but not windy and
only a little off and on drizzle. We had about 75 species in our section, which
includes the Long Point Unit of Reelfoot NWR.
Highlights were mostly marsh birds lingering in the moist soils units along KY
1282. We had at least 3 Virginia Rails respond to tape playback. We also had at
least 3 Sedge Wrens and 2 Marsh Wrens (saw 2 of each). Also there were at least
3 Le Conte's Sparrows all in one patch that actually came up to pishing. Other
main highlight was an Orange-crowned Warbler over along the edge of Lake No. 9
on KY 971.
Numerous flocks of Snow Geese going over during the day and about 2000 Greater
White-fronteds on the NWR. Got all the regular dabblers including maybe more
than 100 Northern Pintail.
We came across one flock of Lapland Longspurs numbering at least 50 along KY
2134; otherwise only a few calling overhead. Very low raptor numbers, in part
due to the conditions.
I've added a few crappy pics to the Long Point Unit eBird list, but Clay has
some better ones he will be adding as soon as he quits doing CBCs . . . :p
