A friend observed this encounter in Boyd County last week. He does not know his hawks, but he said they were large and "clumsy." I'm guessing red-tails or red-shoulders. He was walking through the forest and came upon a tree with multiple squirrels (~ 5) chasing each other and generally raising a ruckus. While he was standing there watching the squirrels, he heard branches crashing in the crown of the tree and saw the first hawk plunge through and knock a squirrel off a branch. The squirrel no sooner hit the ground when a second hawk coming in from a different direction dove down and pinned it to the ground. Then both hawks flew off together with the squirrel. Quite amazing.
