Birded the Jeffersonville waterfront and the main basin of the Ohio River
from Ashland park this afternoon. Basically the same stuff Del saw earlier
in the day but the numbers seemed to increase a bit. Between the two areas
I had at least 200 Horned Grebe; ~400 Ring-billed, 7 Herring, and 1
Bonaparte's gull; 40 or so Ruddy Ducks; about 10 Pied-billed Grebes, 8 or
so Bufflehead and a single Red-breasted Merganser.
The most impressive raft, with what must've been 500+ birds, was on the far
side of the basin just downstream of the canal. They were too far to count
accurately and the light was dwindling but best I could tell, it consisted
mostly of Ring-necks, Redheads, Canvasback, scaup, a few more Horned Grebes
and Ruddys plus the lingering scoters.
