Thank you everyone who wanted to see and wanted to try to ID the caterpillar. I submitted it to bugguide.net. The response I got was: Classification Kingdom Animalia (Animals) Phylum Arthropoda (Arthropods) Class Insecta (Insects) Order Lepidoptera (Butterflies and Moths) No Taxon (Moths) Superfamily Bombycoidea Family Sphingidae (Sphinx Moths) Subfamily Macroglossinae Tribe Macroglossini Genus Eumorpha Species fasciatus (Banded Sphinx - Hodges#7865) I have searched under the criteria Banded Sphinx on in the internet and really have not been able to find a picture that is like mine. But, apparently it is quite variable in appearance. When I searched for Eumorpha fasciatus caterpillar pictures I got several that are close. See: http://www.treknature.com/gallery/North_America/Mexico/photo65914.htm among others. I was amazed at the requests for the image I shot.
