Although it is far afield from Kentucky, this recent sighting was just too
interesting not to share. The bird in the photo is NOT a meadowlark. It is
a Yellow-throated Longclaw, an African species related to pipits and
wagtails. I saw several in Ghana recently.
The similarities to meadowlarks are striking - they even have the same
pattern of white outer tail feathers. and similar grassland habitats as
well. But not even closely related.
A really amazing example of evolutionary convergence. Nature and birds
just never cease to amaze.
