We just returned from a 3 week hiking and birding trip to the mountains of
Colorado. On the way home we noticed the annual sunflowers which come up
wild along the interstate in Kansas. The flowers are small and hardy and
drought resistance. I would like to add them to our native grass fields on
our caving club property and set aside fields on our farm. This sunflower is
smaller than the ones planted in huge irrigated fields in Kansas.

Does anyone know the variety and a seed source?

Ptarmigan are our favorite alpine tundra bird. One ounce of alpine willow
buds provide 1000 calories for the ptarmigan.
