Monday morning while Robert and Bonnie Dever and I were enjoying the godwit, several other birds were present including 2 pale phalaropes which I identified as male Wilson's. Upon returning to our vehicles to go get lunch, I told Robert that something was bothering me about the phalaropes that I couldn't put a handle on and that they may be Red-necked. We walked back and looked at them again, and I finally decided they were male Wilson's with one being a little odd having the neck streak a little more reddish. Late that afternoon after watching the godwit and other birds with a number of observers, David Brown arrived and suggested that one of the phalaropes was a Red-necked, I wish I'd looked at it more closely because he was correct. While going through photos of the godwit, I found a few that had the phalaropes included. One is clearly a male Wilson's but the other is a very indistinctly marked male Red-necked, possibly a first summer bird. It is the most indistinctly marked example I've seen of that species. The bird has a partially spread wing in one image which shows a hint of a white wing bar which eliminates Wilson's. I'd like to congratulate David for his find and also apologize to others that were present earlier for missing this bird. This is a good lesson for me which will make me more careful, especially when something seems a little odd about a bird. I'll check McElroy this morning and make sure a report gets out early if it or other birds of particular interest are present. David L.
