We found our first Louisiana Waterthrush of the season at Sloan’s Pond in Mammoth Cave NP this morning.   The Pond walk and parking lot is currently closed for renovations, so we had to park nearby and walk along a bike trail back in the woods, then a little off trail to get close enough to the pond to listen.   One individual was singing consistently, and we may have heard a second chipping.   Equally excited to hear the Pied-billed Grebes calling from the far end of the pond.   By the looks of the progress that has been made on the boardwalk, we’re hoping it will be reopened before long; currently, none of the board walk can be used.
Several of us got photos of the Waterthrush, so they should be added to the checklist throughout the day.    From what I recall, the earliest prior record for Louisiana Waterthrush in KY was March 12; we’re wishing now we had checked there 5 days ago!  Haha.
