On June 2, 2017 Hap Chambers and I observed 26 adult Black-necked Stilts in
the lower Hickman bottoms Hwy 94 near Midway Church Rd. It appears that at
least one pair successfully raised two offspring.
Today July 28 as we drove through the same area two adult stilts were
aggressively defending the weedy mudflat where two juvenile stilts were
present. We watched the juveniles meandering around. They never flew. At
one point they flopped belly down on the mud next to each other to rest.
The adults continued to fly and squawk as cars drove past.. It was a soul
satisfying look.
