The owner of the Shady Cliff Resort is very welcoming to birders but he has a
couple of specific requests regarding parking . . .
He asks for visitors to pay $5.00 to park on the premises . . . and I believe
the preferred spot with honor system paying is at the red dot north of the
restaurant on the attached screen shot. I didn't see it, but he said there is a
small kiosk with envelopes and a sticker or tag to put in car or on windshield.
There is a relatively clean porta-potty between the red dot and the restaurant.
Next to the restaurant next to the causeway across the lake is also a small
snack bar.
He said he rents kayaks. The crude red "X" marks some stairs down to a dock
next to the resort's lodge that was the best viewing spot for the bird late
yesterday. For a couple of hours it rested on top of a big sandstone boulder
that is out off the bank on the far side of the lake (red arrow on attached
screen shot). It sat here, on a dock right across the lake from the viewing
spot, and in a partly dead tree farther southwest down the lake on the far side.
It apparently was only seen in this area, but presumably could move to other
spots up or down the lake and be out of view. It was seen flying around the
area that can be viewed from the red "X". Views were OK, but photographs were
challenging from across the lake. Best photos were taken from a boat. The bird
appeared to be quite tame or at least used to people in boats.
This general area could be a madhouse with the holiday weekend. The resort
owner said it should be his busiest weekend of the year.
