I was watching a Coopers Hawk in my backyard while it perched motionless on a limb of a sweetgum tree about 10 feet above ground. After several minutes a squirrel ran slowly across the yard straight for the sweetgum, then ran up the tree and out the limb towards the hawk. As the squirrel approached, the hawk turned towards the squirrel and opened its beak and raised its shoulders making it appear three or four times as large as the squirrel. The squirrel continued approaching the hawk, never hesitating. When the squirrel was within two feet, the hawk turned and glided away.
