Geese in trees and other High Places - When Ospreys began to nest for the first
time in KY (in about 50 yrs.) (at LBL), I noted a problem with Giant Canada
Geese attempting to nest in the first known Osprey nest. The nest was high
above Honker Lake in the top portion of a metal powerline tower, mid-lake. GC
Geese begin nesting in KY before Ospreys return to KY for the nesting season. I
suggested (and LBL wildlife staff implemented) placing a highway traffic cone
in the Osprey nest until the Ospreys arrived to nest. This approach worked
making the nest available only to the Osprey pair. Ron, the staff person, said
it wasn't much fun climbing the tower to place the cone and then climbing again
for cone removal when the Ospreys returned. GCG will nest high above the ground
or water; goslings jump out of their nest soon after the brood hatches.

This morning, I added to our collection of unusual characters that we've seen
perched in the dead-oak snag across the road. A pair of Canada geese landed
there and rested for a while… long enough for a few photos, which I've posted
to Flickr. https://flic.kr/p/EYS85ehttps://flic.kr/p/FKX6cqStephen Tyson, ;
