April 12-May 17
8 birders joined me on the first migration walk at Cherokee Park. We worked
hard to find birds on a beautiful day but were rewarded with some gems. A few
First of Year (FOY) birds for me.
Highlights include :
flyover great egret, great blue heron, 2 double-crested cormorants
4 raptor species 1 FOY Broad-winged Hawk, and then a Cooper's Hawk,
Red-tailed Hawk and Red-shouldered all in one thermal!!
5 warbler species FOY Prairie Warbler (heard only), FOY 2 Black-throated
Green, several Yellow-throated Warblers and Northern Parula, and flocks of
Yellow-rumors Warblers with a few handsome males singing.
A Kingfisher did a flyby down Beargrass Creek and we had several wood ducks
including a female in a tree.
1 heard a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 2 Hermit Thrush, and a young Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker were the only winter birds we found.
American Goldfinch and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were by far the most common
birds of the day. I think we had a conservative estimate of 50 gnatcatchers!!
They were everywhere in groups of 4 or more.
36 species seen or heard.
Next walk will be next Wednesday April 19th at 8:30 am.
Good Birding
