A check of the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher's nest in Livingston County this morning and this afternoon revealed that all but two (I think) of the young have left the nest. I believe I could distinguish three young calling from a nearby Sycamore, and was able to obtain photos of one. It is amazing how much they have grown in three days and how much down they have lost. They look quite similar to a very pale Western Kingbird now. It is nice knowing that the adults have successfully fledged at least part of their brood. Hopefully they will nest in the area again. The Bell's Vireo was singing again this morning in the same nearby area as reported on the 17th. An adult Mississippi Kite was seen over the East Fork of the Clark's River near Benton. This is a good bit east of their usual range, but it is just a matter of time before nesting birds are found away from the Mississippi and Ohio River floodplains. Five Black-necked Stilts were present at Open Pond in Fulton County with two birds incubating. It is quite possible that a third is incubating also on a nest that is hidden by vegetation. That would exlain the fifth bird which was just standing around. Successful nesting of Black-necked Stilts has been documented only three times in Kentucky, and it is questionable that water will remain long enough for these birds to be successful. Also present at Open Pond were the first arriving southbound shorebirds. A Willet, a Pectoral Sandpiper, and a Lesser Yellowlegs were looking very worn after their trip from the breeding grounds. The Willet was already advanced in its molt to basic plumage, and tied an early fall date for that species. A pair of lingering northbound Semipalmated Plovers was looking relatively crisp in comparison to those that had traveled far. Other birds of interest in the lower Hickman Bottoms were a Blue-winged Teal at Open Pond and a vocalizing Pied-billed Grebe at Island 8 Slough where they bred successfully in 1998.
