See Aratinga.com for excellent info on CR. Highly recommend. The roads are
good! The guides were excellent. We did a general 21 day 1,300 mile overview of
the country to top bird locations. The hotels were perfect. The birding
"resorts" were ideal.
Half of our group went back again Mar. this year. And, we will all probably go
again in 2020. March is when the Resp. QUETZAL are in full breeding plumage
with long tails.
Aratinga is the only tour company recommended by Frommer's for Costa Rica. Do
your own driving and save a bundle.

There are quite a few laminated pamphlets for the separate regions of CR.
Don't bother with the general CR one, tho. Our guide at the Monteverde Cloud
Forest took screen shots of those cards, which were much
more detailed, and answered every question anybody had. Seems like an overall
guide person who took you around would be ideal. Be prepared
for bad roads if you do go near Monteverde. However, the birds each place we
were were worth the trouble.
Do any of you have
experience with birding guides in Costa Rica.We
are planning to go there in December but are not too keen on
staying in one of the dedicated birding resorts. Our idea
was to stay in San Jose and do a few day trips to nearby
forest reserves / coastal areas. That would allow us time to
do things other than birding. The perfect person
would be a guide who is familiar with flora / fauna and also
can help with history / culture of the area. Our
idea is to hire the services of this person as a dedicated
guide for the duration of our stay.Would appreciate any suggestions in this
regard.
Thanks,
