The White-tailed Hawk reported here was a mistake.sorry! It should have been a Red-tailed. I guess I was dreaming of south Texas!? From: Debby & Steve Tyson [mailto:tyson9152@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2011 8:05 PM To: 'birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: Schochoh, Logan Co. weekend list, help w/an eagle sighting It was a great birding weekend. We counted 31 species at home (list below), not including an eagle spotted today.more about that later. We spotted our FOS DE Junco and White-throated Sparrow, both of which we only see here during the fall migration. I watched a kettling flock of 11-12 Black Vultures yesterday afternoon, then saw an unidentified accipiter pass overhead that appeared to be migrating. Shortly after that I saw two more accipiters moving south too, though not in as big a hurry. One appeared to be further out (it looked much smaller). Then, while I watched, the smaller bird dove and harassed the larger one and, when close together, the difference in size was really significant! I realized then that I was watching a Sharp-shinned and Cooper's together. The Sharpy repeatedly harassed the Cooper's, before eventually splitting off. The Harrier infestation continues over the harvested beans fields. There were often two in view at a time this weekend and often on the ground. About the eagle.I was standing trying to ID some sparrows today when I spotted what I first thought was a Turkey Vulture. When I got it in binocular view, I realized it was not a vulture and was obviously too large and universally dark for the buteos that could be here. I'm not experienced with eagles and thought it could have been a juvenile Bald (though we're miles from water here.). It was soaring with occasional shallow, pumping, wing beats and was a long way off, but I was seeing lighter in the wing primaries underneath (similar to a Turkey Vulture) and when it wheeled, it appeared to be lighter near the base of the tail on top.
