I birded Central Park and Arboretum and vicinity today between 11:15 and 12:45. Nothing unexpected, but it was a great day to be out for a walk. Here's the trip list. Canada Goose Mallard Turkey Turkey Vulture Cooper's Hawk Red-tailed Hawk Am. Kestrel Rock Dove Mourning Dove Downy Woodpecker Red-bellied Woodpecker Am. Crow Tree Swallow C. Chickadee Titmouse HERMIT THRUSH - 2 Am. Robin Mockingbird Brown Thrasher E. Starling Cedar Waxwing E. Towhee Chipping Sparrow Field Sparrow Song Sparrow D.E. Junco N. Cardinal Red-winged Blackbird E. Meadowlark C. Grackle Brown-headed Cowbird House Finch Am. Goldfinch House Sparrow Also hearing and seeing two Great Horned Owls behind a friend's house in Independence. Suspect they are nesting nearby. This afternoon I watched nesting activity of six different pairs of birds in my back yard of 1/2 acre. Canada Goose (darn it), Mallard, Song Sparrow and Chickadee two feet apart, House Finch and Cowbird. The Cowbird is skulking around the House Finch nest looking to parasitize it. I saw one Chickadee plucking blooms off of a Weeping Cherry and presenting it to the other. Don Martin
