Birding this cloudy gray afternoon in the Cave Run area was fairly productive. A stop at the Minor Clark fish hatchery produced about a hundred Canada Geese, a Belted Kingfisher (male), Eastern Blue Birds (2), Great Blue herons (4), Buffleheads (4), Bonaparte's Gull, Ring Billed gull, Mallards. Returning later in the afternoon (4:30) most of the birds were gone except for the kingfisher and a handful of Canada Geese with a lone juvenile Tundra Swan. From the dam there were very few birds on the water -- a few gulls and ducks in the distance. Working the woods along the shoreline: W.B. Nuthatch, Tufted Titmice, Chickadees, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Cardinals. On the Ramey Creek inlet were 8 pairs of beautiful Hooded Mergansers enjoying the still water which they had to themselves. From the Twin Knobs shore I could see several hundred ducks across the lake in the shallows along the Zilpo shoreline. Using a spotting scope I could make out many Widgeons, Mallards, a few Buffleheads, and what I'm pretty sure were 6 Horned Grebes in winter garb. I also saw a pair on the East Fork Lake (Ohio) a few weeks earlier. Again I was using a spotting scope and observing a fair distance across the lake.
