30 October 2005

I had to run a errand in Hopkinsville today so I worked in a little
casual birding around Hoptown and took the scenic route home through
southern Christian and Todd Counties.

The birds of the day were the RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and the GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, so many of you will not care to read further.

I first tried to access the 3 watershed lakes northeast of Hopkinsville
and found them still closed to the public, more than 4 years after 9/11.
Apparently, much of the change from that event is going to be permanent
whether it makes any sense or not. (I am not trying to inject politics.
Many security changes need to be retained and/or strengthened, but much
silliness has also occurred in the name of security.) I did some stop
and go pishing in the area and was able to produce 1 RED-BREASTED
NUTNATCH and 1 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER along with several CAROLINA
CHICKADEES, CAROLINA WRENS, AND TUFTED TITMICE.

On the way home, I headed south down KY 109 to go by what appeared on
the map to be 3 small lakes/large ponds. Only one of them contained
water; the others had been victimized by drainage ditches. The one
known as Long Pond contained water and looked picturesque. (The
picturesque scene was enhanced by 2 horse drawn buggies that passed me
filled with the local religious conservatives. They were dressed in
their Sunday best black and white hand made clothes.) There, I
observed: 1 GREAT BLUE HERON, 1 SWAMP SPARROW, 2 SONG SPARROWS, 1
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW AND 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS along with the
numerous CHICKADEES, a DOWNY WOODPECKER, AND A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER.

I had no other real reason or opportunity to stop until I reached
Guthrie Swamp's northwest corner in southern Todd County. Present here
were 57 CANADA GEESE, app. 100 MALLARDS, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and about
10 KILLDEER. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was calling in the background.
Strong sun and my scope in my closet rather than my truck prevented
close examination of all birds.

That concludes this report.
