Yesterday I was doing some yard work, staking up some leggy hibiscus branches. All of a sudden I heard a big ruckus, and something almost like a human baby crying. The other sounds have no description. What in the world was it? A shrub about 30 feet away from me was where all the action was. Surely there was no baby in there. I watched as a brown thrasher hopped around on the ground, then up into the shrub. Again, and again. Hmmm. Lots of thrasher "chip" sounds too. So I tried to see what was going on. The shrub has very dense foliage so I couldn't see very far into it, but finally I saw part of a coil of a smooth black snake that looked to be as large as my arm. Wow. I went off to get a hoe. I thought I might coax the snake out of the bush, but then what? When I got back the snake was no where to be seen, and when I parted the foliage I could see the nest was empty. The adult birds were still chipping, but more calm. It is amazing to me that the snake could find that nest, when we didn't know it was there, and we are outside in the area a lot. My husband saw a brown thrasher chase a snake across the driveway a couple weeks ago, maybe 75 feet from this nest. We always have brown thrashers nesting here, but I have never seen this happen. I like the snakes, and know that they have to eat, but I don't want them to eat my toads, skinks, bird eggs, or baby birds! And I especially don't want to see it happen.
