I visited Barren River Lake today and since we bascially don't ever hear anything from there any more, below is a summary of observations. Other than a wad of maybe 600-700 Ring-billed Gulls near the head of the Beaver Creek embayment, the commonest bird on the lake today was Bonaparte's Gull; several hundred total scattered in mostly small, loose groups all along the old river channel plus the Walnut Creek embayment. Other waterbirds included: Canada Goose (a few) Mallard (a few) American Wigeon 6 Northern Shoveler 1 Redhead 4 Ring-necked Duck 5 Lesser Scaup 1 Red-breasted Merganser 2 males Pied-billed Grebe 100+ Horned Grebe maybe 15-20 Common Loon (surprisingly none) Great Blue Heron (a few) American Coot 6 Sandhill Crane (only 7) Ruth & Lew Young's Rufous Hummingbird was a no show for me in about 45 minutes during the late afternoon, although Lew had seen it earlier in the afternoon. bpb, Louisville ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== When posting on BIRDKY, please close posts with your first and last name and your address (city or county). * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To post on BIRDKY, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS website at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos/default.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS Photo Page to view photos of birds recently sighted in Kentucky: http://www.flickr.com/groups/kentucky_ornithological_society/pool * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison.
