The correct answer to the November Photo Quiz is Bank
Swallow (front) and Tree Swallow, both juveniles. The

Juveniles of these species can be very similar, with
Tree Swallow often showing a somewhat ill-defined
breastband as the bird pictured. The breastband of
Bank Swallow is darker and more well-defined, and
often extends as a streak down the center of the
breast.
Differences in size and structure are apparent in the
photo, with Tree Swallow being larger, bulkier, and
larger-headed.
Tree Swallow is a darker brown than Bank, and
typically doesn't show the pale feather edging
apparent on juvenile Bank Swallow as depicted on the
quiz bird. A reliable feature for distinguishing
these birds is the clean-cut line of demarcation
between the dark auriculars and white throat of Tree
Swallow, this area being less well-defined in Bank.
These swallows were photographed 5 July 2005 on the
Sinclair Unit of the Peabody WMA in Muhlenberg County,
and although obtained on a gray overcast day, the
image depicts the features used to distinguish these
species in juvenal plumage.
