Today is International Migratory Bird Day.
At 3:00pm, Joel Greenberg, author of A Feathered River Across the Sky: The
Passenger Pigeon's Flight to Extinction, will be giving a talk entitled Hope is
the Thing with Feathers at Morning Pointe East, 150 Shoreside Drive, Lexington.
After the talk, he will show a copy of the short documentary From Billions to
None, by Project Passenger Pigeon (passengerpigeon.org). The airing will be the
Kentucky debut. Copies of Mr. Greenberg's book will be for sale before and
after the event and he will be available for signatures and questions.
At 9:00pm tonight, there will be a free outdoor showing of the 2011 animated
movie Rio, on Camp Kearney hill in Jacobson Park, Lexington. The film follows
the story of a domesticated Macaw living in Minnesota and his rollicking
adventure to Rio de Janeiro meet the last female of his species. The film is a
great way to introduce children to the importance of bird conservation. Bring
the whole family and a blanket.
At 2:00pm tomorrow (Sunday, Mother's Day), there will be a free showing of The
Lost Bird Project at Morning Pointe East, 150 Shoreside Drive, Lexington. The
film follows sculptor Todd McGrain as he sets out to create
memorials to five extinct American birds and the road-trip that he and his
brother-in-law take as they search for the locations where
the birds were last seen in the wild and negotiate for permission to
install McGrain’s large bronze sculptures there.
All events are free, presented as part of the 1st annual Bluegrass Birding
Festival held today and tomorrow in Jacobson Park and surrounding areas. The
Bluegrass Birding Festival is two packed days dedicated to celebrating birding
in central Kentucky, to appreciating the beauty of birds, and to understanding
the need for bird conservation.
