Thanks to everyone for the interest in the peregrines. Ramesh and I had luck
spotting one this evening about 7:40 on the corner of the 21C building on the
corner of Main and Upper, just above where the road is closed off. We watched
him (her?) about a half hour while he just hung out, preened, took a bath,
stretched, and cleaned his toes. At about 8:05 he suddenly flew off in the
direction toward UK campus. We waited about another 1/2 hour for him to
return, then started to head back home when he flew back over us on the MLK
bridge where it crosses over Vine. He had what appeared to be prey in his
talons. He flew toward the 5/3 building then disappeared amongst the other
buildings. We ran back, but couldn't find him again.
This morning I was downtown and did not spot him, but did have an interesting
conversation with the receptionist in the law office on the 17th floor of the
Vine Street building (where Dupree mutual funds are, next to the Hyatt). They
have a rooftop patio there and used to see him there very regularly a number of
years ago, but now only see him passing by at times. However, there were bird
parts strewn over one of the lunch tables and on the floor, which the
receptionist says showed up after hours in the past couple days. I asked them
to keep an eye out and call me if they see him hanging out anywhere in
particular.
If others are able to get downtown to watch for him, it would be interesting to
see if he follows this same pattern on a regular basis. We now know that he
comes back to the same area, but was gone for at least a half hour tonight.

Thanks to Suzanne for bringing this up with Kate (see below). I'd love to be
able to mobilize the birding interest around Lexington into some great causes
for the birds we love. Kate does some great work, and ASK even supports her
monetarily in these endeavors. Maybe some of you who work downtown could spend
a lunch break this beautiful week trekking around with some binoculars! Any of
you going to Thursday Night Live could do the same (no one will think you're
weird, promise!). I live close to d-town and could plan a family walk there as
well. The more eyes on the buildings/skies the more likely we are to spot the
nest.

Ramesh and I spoke with Kate Hayden over the weekend and asked if she needed
any volunteer help with her birding projects. She said she really needs some
people to help her figure out where the peregrines downtown are nesting and to
track their movements. They apparently hang around the Central Bank building,
the big blue building, and the one where the new 21C is coming in (where they
apparently used to be headquartered and were chased off). They have been seen
carrying nesting material , but she is not sure where they are currently
nesting or what their current patterns are. Could we maybe get word out to
both ASK and CKAS folks that she would really appreciate some help in
monitoring these birds and getting info back to her? Could be a fun
project....Suzanne
