I took a quick glance over Reservoirs 2 and 3 today from Lakeshore Drive.
Highlights were about 12 canvasbacks, 8 common goldeneyes, hundreds of hooded
mergansers, ruddy ducks, Canada geese. Quite a number of ring-billed gulls
along with a few herring gulls. Right as I was about to leave, all the gulls
took off in a flurry. Within seconds an adult peregrine falcon came into view
and spent the next 15 minutes harassing only the gulls. He never caught one or
really even made a "serious" attempt at one. Interestingly, the mobs of
mergansers were left completely alone. Frankly, the non-gull birds seemed not
even to notice the falcon's presence.
