This is a late posting of my paddle on Cedar Creek Lake near Stanford KY on
Friday, June 6.
I observed a juvi (white) Little Blue Heron catch and eat a good-sized frog
while butterflies flitted about. Ebird posting noted that it shouldn't be
here this time of year so is apparently a late migrant. I will see if it
is still there on Friday.
The eaglets I've been watching have fledged. I believe one probably the
night before I arrived as it was very unsure of itself and had lots of
"read, set, wait" moments before making any move. It had fledged to a deer
stand railing, then worked its way up to branch where it practiced moving
about, put up with Blue Jays diving and sometimes hitting it and finally
when mom called it took off and landed in another branch on the far side of
the nest. I was thrilled to have timed the fledge so well. I never saw
the other eaglet or the male but feel sure it fledged successfully.
On to the Osprey nest with one chick. Mom and Dad both occupied the nest
with dad leaving to get one stick and then to go fishing. I was very
impressed with show-off, over-achiever Dad when he returned with a
good-sized fish in each talon.
I then photographed Tree Swallow young with mouths looking like blooming
flowers and a banded Prothonotary Warbler.
