I'm afraid someone has declared 'open season' on my poor, slithery backyard
residents. Today it was an immature Red Tail hawk. When I saw him on the
ground, trying to subdue something in the grass... I reached for my binocs
again. He flew up to a low branch of a dogwood tree, with a garter snake that
might have been 15" long. It took him three or four 'gulps' to get it down.
Head end first, of course. By the time I tuned in, the snake wasn't fighting
back.
