Extensive walks in Berea Woods on Saturday and Raven Run on Sunday, turned up
no late warblers. Raven Run was rather quit for such a gorgeous morning. Berea
Woods, on the other hand, was quite active. 9 species of warbler, all resident,
with some in large quantities. The best finds were an Osprey playing on the
thermals, just for us or most certainly right in front of us, and large numbers
of Waxwings. A more precise number of them might be hoards.
We had a "the good, the bad, and the ugly" stand off between a waxwing, Rhonda,
and myself, with a blueberry bush loaded with green berries. All participants
backed off due to the un ripeness of the bounty. Incase there is any doubt, I
would have been the ugly.
New yard bird yesterday, a Willow Flycatcher, caught my ear from a grove of
young saplings (cherry and locust) in the vacant lot behind us. This is
adjacent to a drainage pit full of cattail and a couple stands of willow tree.
Finally spotted him when he did what flycatchers do, straying out to nab an
insect and return to position.
