We had a great weekend for our ASK spring weekend at Carter Caves State Park.
We
had a light turnout with only 15 members participating. We had a total of 76
species. For me the star of the weekend was a displaying male Summer Tanager.
He
was really putting on a show and had a couple of females interested. In general
the tanagers were fabulous with many Summer and Scarlets around. Then of course
the Red-headed Woodpeckers were also all over. They have a nice breeding
population at the park. Other highlights included lots of calling Acadian
Flycatchers and 19 species of warbler.
Betsy and I stopped at Minor Clark Fish Hatchery on the way back, as did
several
other people. If you add in our list of birds from the Fish Hatchery we pushed
the overall species count to 97 and warbler count to 22.
