I was birding today in Lexington in a field that included Dickcissel,
Grasshopper and Savannah Sparrows that were giving all appearances of
protecting nests. I was trying to estimate numbers when a huge tractor and
mower came in and started cutting.
I asked him to wait and explained that mowing right now would likely
destroy nests of some birds that struggle to find suitable habitats. He
probably thought I was a bit crazy but said the property belonged to UK and
gave me a contact.
Thanks to George Ward and Jim Conner at UK for a quick decision to delay
mowing, to Kenney H for his willingness to stop mowing and to Brainard for
some advice. George said they work with Fish & Wildlife for nature and
wildlife information and thanked me for identifying this property as a
special bird habitat.
It may only be a 30 day reprieve rather than a permanent change but I will
try and check it again next year.
Location: McGrathiana Parkway (near Newtown Pike and UK/Spindletop Farm)
