I've noticed several things of note of the past few days.

1) Vultures are back in Russell County. I started seeing 1 or 2 at a
time about a week ago. Yesterday I had about 15 Turkey Vultures over the
pasture across the road from my house. Black Vultures are here as well.

2) Male Red-winged Blackbirds are staking out territories along Hayters
Gap Road (VA Route 80) and US 19. These two things are my spring markers.

3) It's clear that the GBH rookery on Elk Garden Creek will not be used
this year. I'm not sure what may have happened since both nests produced
young last year. However, see the next item.

4) The larger of the two GBH nests has been appropriated by a Red-tailed
Hawk this year. I saw an adult bird fairly clearly yesterday but did not
have my binocular. Today I've seen just the head above the rim of the nest.
Could this be the reason the Great Blues didn't return? What do you think?

Good birds,

Jerry
