While birding around the property yesterday morning I noticed a Red-eyed Vireo in the maple tree I was standing beside. It had a piece of straw in its beak, and it was staying within a few feet of where I was standing. I backed away and kept watching. The bird came down to a branch only about 3 feet off the ground and went to a partially built nest. I had mowed past this tree the evening before and even mowed close enough to brush the branch as I went by. I was probably within a foot of the nest and didn't know it. Later when I came back with the camera one of the pair was there. Here it is sitting near the nest. The nest can be seen through the leaves on the left. Notice how the bird's throat and head feathers are puffed out. It may have been because it felt I was too near. It stayed in that position for several seconds. I don't think I have ever seen one sit still for that long, except on the nest. I backed off until the bird left. Then I got a couple of close-ups of the nest. You can see the nest is not yet complete. It's amazing how they can weave the nest around the branches. Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt
