Saturday, November 16, found Mike Sanders, John Kelly, Sheri Hiter, Don Carrier, Tom Hunter, Daryl Owens, and Jerry Thornhill wandering around Northeast Tennessee looking for birds. They were not disappointed. Austin Springs produced Merlin, Bald Eagle, Swamp Sparrow, and Greater Yellowlegs along with other more common species. Paddle Creek Ponds gave up Savannah Sparrow and Wilson's Snipe along with several duck species. Little Italy served good food including a free second pizza. The Weir Dam area gave great looks at Eastern Screech-Owl and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet who showed why he is so named. Musick's Campground had three grebe species (Pied-billed, Horned, and Red-necked) as well as several loons. Middlebrook Lake had Hooded Merganser, Double-crested Cormorant, and Eastern Towhee to bring the day's tally to 67 species. The weather was great and the company even better. A more detailed report with pictures and complete species list is available on the club web site (www.rcbirds.org) in the Trip Reports section. Jerry Thornhill RCBC
