Hey Dave, Don and I have been looking at your sandpiper photo, and first let me say that we are far from being shorebird experts, especially Don. LOL. We think the bird may be a Buff-breasted Sandpiper considering size, bill length and shape and color, pale face and breast, back pattern and long legs, though it is difficult to see the leg color in the photos. This bird was feeding with some killdeer and "peeps" in a large grassy area near the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Our mystery bird was nearly the size of a Killdeer & you can see in one of the pics a comparison with a Least Sandpiper I believe. If this bird proves to be what I think it is, it is away from the normal migration route . I always struggle with shorebird ID's so it will be interesting to see what others think.
