Yesterday, Feb 18, 21 birders made up of the Buchanan County Bird Club, the Russell County Bird Club, the Bibbee Nature Club of Bluefield, and some visitors, went to bird Burkes Garden in Tazewell County. It was a beautiful day with highs in the 50's, and the raptors were out in force, possibly pushed to feeding before the impending snow storm came in. The two resident Bald Eagles were at their nest, and 7 Golden Eagles, adults as well as immatures, were observed both in the air and on the ground. One magnificent bird circled just overhead giving everyone, especially a couple of new birders, fanstastic views. The group got to see 3 Rough-Legged Hawks, 3 Northern Harriers and 10 Red-tails. In the area's pond and streams American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, Mallards and Canada Geese were in evidence. The day's final count was 40 avian species. The complete list is below. It was a wonderful day of friends enjoying being together joined by a common interest. There was much joking and kidding among the group which added to the enjoyment. Since the Burkes Garden store was closed, the group had lunch at the Burkes Garden Community Center. It was a bit breezy at the picnic tables, but the sun helped warm things a bit, and there were very good desserts to be had with Jane Thornhill's brownies and My wife Lynda's peanut butter fudge. Those attending (in alphabetical order) were Danny and Ginger Breeding, Don Carrier, Ted and Sharon Dingler, Doug and Sally Feoffer, Peggy Herbert, Tom Hunter, Roger and Lynda Mayhorn, Marie Miller, Wade Snyder, Ed and Mary Talbott, Jerry and Jane Thornhill, Allen and Mindy Waldron and Sisters Pauline and Mary, (catholic nuns - Sorry I didn't get their last names).
