On Saturday, Nov 9, 8 members of the Buchanan County Bird Club made its annual trip up to Hinton WV to bird around the Bluestone Dam, the New River and surrounding areas to look for waterfowl and eagles. We were joined by our friends, members of the Bibbee Nature Club, who always show us lots of good birds while we are there. We didn't get as many ducks as usual, but we did get 3 Bald Eagles, Sharp-shinned and Red-tailed Hawks, Hooded Mergansers, Double-crested Cormorants, Great Blue Herons and lots of Canada Geese. After having lunch at the DQ "bird observatory" (It has large glass walls and is situated out over the New River) we drove to the nearby Three Rivers Avian Center and watched the release of a female Golden Eagle called "Aura" who had been shot and nearly died of lead poisoning. The bird flew from a cage in the back of a van, skimming the ground before flying into a nearby tree where she sat for about 5 minutes before flying away. She was fitted with a radio transmitter and can be tracked electronically. You can see photos of the release and some of us watching it if you go to the Three Rivers Avian Center facebook page and scroll down the page. BCBC members who birded the Hinton area were Don Carrier, Tom & Laverne Hunter, Roger Mayhorn, Marie Miller, Daryl Owens and Ed & Mary Talbott. Thanks to Allen Waldron and David Hunlin (not sure of the spelling) for joining us.
